Abstract

This research and development study aimed to: 1) investigate the current situation of respiratory infections among pediatric patients, 2) assess caregivers’ needs, 3) develop the new “Narakids Respiratory Info” LINE channel, and 4) evaluate effectiveness of the new channel. Study was divided in three phases. Phase 1 investigated the current situation and caregivers’ needs with 10 caregivers. Phase 2 was dedicated to the “Narakids Respiratory Info” Line channel. And phase 3 consisted in evaluating the effectiveness of social media channel, using a one-group quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design. Participants were 30 caregivers of pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections. Research instruments comprised the “Narakids Respiratory Info” channel, a knowledge test, a caregiving behavior assessment, a caregiver burden assessment, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Content validity was assessed by three experts, yielding item-objective congruence (IOC) indices ranging from .67 to 1.00. The knowledge test had a KR-20 reliability coefficient of .73, while the caregiving behavior and caregiver burden assessments had Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from .71 to .75. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Results showed as follows.
1. The number of pediatric patients aged 1 month to 5 years with respiratory tract infections during 2022 – 2024 showed an increasing trend. Caregivers lacked knowledge regarding infection prevention, medication use, and recognition of warning signs requiring medical attention.
2. The “Narakids Respiratory Info” channel provides information on respiratory tract infections, care of children with fever, and proper nasal irrigation techniques.
3. After using the “Narakids Respiratory Info” LINE Official Account, caregivers’ knowledge scores increased by a mean of 2.50 points, and caregiving behavior scores increased by a mean of 3.07 points. Meanwhile, caregiver burden scores decreased by a mean of 1.57 points. Caregivers reported the highest level of satisfaction with the application (M = 4.63, SD = 0.52).
As a conclusion, the “Narakids Respiratory Info” might be of help for providing knowledge and promoting appropriate caregiving behaviors among caregivers of pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections in Southern Thailand.
