Effects of Alcohol Drinking Prevention Program by Application of Health Literacy with “Facebook” among Student in Primary School

Alcohol drinking is a risk factor leading to premature death and disability. Population around the world die from alcohol, about 3 million people a year. Factors that cause youth to drink alcohol comes from Curiosity, try a group of friends, access to advertising media, etc. Thailand has found that youth drinking alcohol increases an average of 4.96 percent per year. However, strategies to prevent alcohol drinking in the youth by health literacy development program such as education, media literacy, practice for critical thinking skill, and decision skill to non-alcohol drinking.
This research is a quasi-experimental research and aims to study the effects of alcohol prevention programs by applying of the concept of health literacy with Facebook communication in primary school. The samples were 64 students in primary school and they were divided into 2 groups (experimental group and comparison group), each group was 32 students. The experimental group received alcohol drinking prevention program. That activities comprise of lecture with media, role play, games, decision-making skills development, group discussion and participated to analyzed about alcohol advertising media, practice communicating via Facebook modeling etc. Comparison group received normal health education about alcohol drinking from school. Intervention were procedures 12 weeks. Data were collected by questionnaires, and data analysis, characteristic data by descriptive statistics such as mean standard deviation, percentile etc. Comparative data by Paired Sample t-test, Independent t-test and ANCOVA were determined at the level of 0.05.
The results found that the experimental group had the Mean score of knowledge, accessed of information about alcohol, media literacy, decision making skills, self-management and intention to not drink alcohol were higher than before the experiment and the comparison group had significantly (p-value<.001).
