The Prevalence and Factors Related to Depression among Older People in Tab Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province

ABSTRACT
The study was a cross-sectional analytical study aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression and the related factors among older people in Tab Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.The sample consisted of 364 older people who were lived in Tab Sakae District.The subjects were recruited by multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected interviews between July to December 2017. Data were collected using a structured interview consisted of 7 Parts: 1)The interview for demographic data, 2) Activities of Daily Living Index Assessment, 3) Perceived Severity of Illness Assessment, 4) Family Relationship Evaluation, 5) Social support Evaluation, 6) The interview for participants in community activity and 7) Thai Geriatric Depression Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and logistics regression analysis. The result showed that the prevalence of depression in older people was 25.6%, of which 19.0% had mild depression. Factors which remained significantly related with depression in older people were female (OR= 3.01, 95% CI= 1.45-6.33, p= 0.003), sufficiency of income (OR= 3.60, 95% CI= 1.81-7.14, p<0.001), family relationship (OR= 3.57, 95% CI= 1.66-6.68 p<0.001), social support (OR= 2.50, 95% CI= 1.63-8.23, p<0.001) and community participants activity (OR= 2.33, 95% CI= 1.17-4.66, p= 0.017). Finding suggest that the healthcare staff should focus on crucial factors including sufficiency of income, family relationship, social support and participation in community activity and lead to planning and control depression in order to reduce depression in the community.
