The Quality Indicators of Nursing Outcomes for Patients with Hip Fracture undergoing Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to study quality indicators of nursing outcomes for patients with hip fracture undergoing hip arthroplasty; and (2) to evaluate the feasibility of applying quality indicators of nursing outcomes for patients with hip fracture undergoing hip arthroplasty. This research used Delphi technique. The sample was selected by the purposive sampling technique and included 18 experts in caring for patients’ hip fracture with total hip arthroplasty. They were 5 head nurses of the Orthopedic Department, 7 orthopedic nursing experts, 4 nursing teachers and academic experts in orthopedic nursing, and 2 orthopedists. Data were collected for 3 rounds. First, experts answered semi-structured questionnaires. Then data were analyzed by content analysis, and the results were constructed rating scale questionnaires for experts to provide their opinions in the second and the third rounds. Data were analyzed by median, mode, and quartile range.


The results were as follows. (1) Experts agreed with 25 items 31 sub-items of quality indicators of nursing outcomes for patients with hip fracture undergoing hip arthroplasty. Those 25 items were most appropriate and classiffied into 6 categories : (a) functions of the body (5 items and 2 sub-items), (b) physiology (7 items and 17 subitems), (c) socio-mental health (4 items), (d) health knowledge and behaviors (3 items and 9 sub-items), (e) health perception (2 items and 3 sub-items), and (g) health family and care giver (4 items). (2) The evaluation result of the feasibility of  applying quality indicators of nursing outcomes for patients with hip fracture undergoing hip arthroplasty was met the criteria at the highest level.
