Abstract

Introduction: The incidences of strokes are increasing among older adults with diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension due to a low awareness of severity, risk, outcomes, and self-efficacy.

Research objectives: To examine the effects of a Protection Motivation Program focusing on stroke prevention behaviors among older adults with uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension in Samut Sakhon Province.

Research methodology: A quasi-experimental study compared a 6-week PMT-based program (n = 33) with the comparison group received usual care (n = 42). Data were collected at pre-test, post-test, and the four-week follow-up using questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U, and the Friedman tests.

Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in perceptions and stroke prevention behaviors (p < .001), all outcomes were significantly higher than those in the comparison group at all time points of measurements (p < .001).

Conclusions: The PMT-based program improved the perceptions of stroke-related severity, perceived susceptibility, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and stroke-preventive behaviors.

Implications: The PMT-based program may serve as a practical guideline for healthcare providers to promote stroke prevention among older adults with diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension.
