Factors Associated to Stress among Elderly People in Chaibadan Sub-district, Chaibadan District, Lopburi Province

Abstract

The study was a cross-sectional analytical study aimed to investigate the level of stress and the associated factors with stress among elderly people in Chai Badan Sub-district, Chai Badan District, Lopburi Province. The samples consisted 270 elderly people who were lived in Chai Badan Sub-district. The samples were recruited by cluster random sampling. Data were collected by interview between August to December 2017. The data were collected using a structural interview consisted of 6 parts as follows: 1.) The interview for demographic data, 2.) Self-Esteem Assessment, 3.) Thai Mental State Examination, 4.) Family Relationship Evaluation 5.) Social support Evaluation, and 6.) Suanprung Stress test-20 (SPST-20). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, and Chi-square test. The result showed that the majority of samples had high stress level (50.5%), followed by moderate stress level (36.3%). The factors which remained significantly associated with stress of elderly people were number of co-morbidities, self-esteem, cognitive impairment and type of family structural (p<0.05). The finding suggest that the healthcare provider should lead to plan and promote good mental health status for reduce stress symptom by enhancing self-esteem knowledge and increasing social support from family and community in order to elderly people can be adaptation and promote the better quality of life
