Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To survey knowledge of antibiotic use in upper respiratory infection (URI), acute diarrhea (DIA), and fresh traumatic wound (WOU) of village health volunteers (VHV) in Chaiyaphum Province. Methods: This cross-sectional survey study collected the data from sampled VHVs in Chaiyaphum Province during January- March 2020 by using 30 item-self-administered questionnaire. There were 10 items per diseases with the full score of 10 in each disease. Results: of 416 VHVs completed and returned questionnaires. On average, knowledge of VHVs in these three diseases was similar with the average scores of 6.75 ± 1.41 (WOU), 6.60 ± 1.83 (URI), and 6.34 ± 1.65 (DIA), respectively. Of the total of 30 questions, more than 50%of VHVs correctly answered in 22 questions with the percentages of correct response ranging from 55.53% to 99.04%. There were 8 questions with less than 50% of VHVs having correct responses (ranging from 15.14% to 45.67%). The question with the highest percentage of wrong answer (15.14% of correct answer)was “taking antibiotic for 7 days can protect infections in WOU with high chance of infections”. Conclusion: VHVs in this study showed a moderate level of knowledge on antibiotic uses in these three diseases. There were some questions that VHVs did not have appropriate knowledge. Therefore, there is a need for training of VHV in term of antibiotic uses because inappropriate knowledge leads to irrational antibiotic uses. Additionally, VHVs play a vital role in communicating appropriate knowledge in their communities.
