Abstract

Objective: To study the tendency of effects from using the cream containing extract from Sahastara preparation (SHT cream) in knee pains among patients with primary knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study in 20 knee OA patients. The volunteers received SHT cream for applying to the affected knee area in amount of 2 grams for 3 times a day (morning, afternoon and evening) for 2 weeks.  The study assessed the change before and after applying the cream using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, Modified Thai WOMAC Index scores, and duration of walking on a flat surface for 100 meters. The study evaluated safety from history-talking and laboratory tests. Results: Volunteers receiving SHT cream had a significantly lower level of all outcomes. In addition, no side effects and no changes in liver and renal function test were identified. Conclusions:  SHT cream shows a tendency of effect in reducing knee pain and safety. The results of this study can be further expanded to clinical trial phase II for comparing the effectiveness of SHT cream with modern medicine.
