Abstract

Objective: To investigate clinical efficacy and safety of Ya ta pra sen in treating primary osteoarthritis of the knee compared with analgesic cream. Methods: The research was an open label randomized control trial. The study allocated 60 volunteers into 2 groups i.e., 31 subjects in Ya ta pra sen (YTS) group receiving 6 mL of YTS 3 time/day and 29 subjects in analgesic cream group receiving 1 gram of cream for 3 time/day. Follow-up time was 14 days after treatment. Clinical efficacy was assessed by joint pain level using visual analog scale (VAS), 100 meters walking time and WOMAC index score. Safety was assessed by physical examination, laboratory tests on liver and renal functions. Results: YTS was effective in relieving knee pain in day14, but pain in YTS group was measured by VAS and WOMAC index score was not significantly different from that in analgesic cream group (P<0.05). However, those with YTS had better 100 meters walking time and global assessment (P=0.027 and P<0.01 respectively). Conclusion: YTS is a good alternative treatment for primary OA knee.
