Abstract

Objective: To study health-related quality of life and various factors related to health-related quality of life in patients with chronic diseases in a community hospital. Method: This research was a cross-sectional survey study. Subjects were 420 patients treated at a chronic disease clinic of Ban Phai Hospital in Khon Kaen during March to June 2018. Subjects were selected by un-proportional stratified and systematic sampling. The research tool was a self-administered questionnaire assessing general health status (9-THAI) Results: Patients with chronic diseases had a moderate quality of life in physical and mental dimensions (Physical Health Score: PHS=34.09, Mental Health Scores: MHS = 36.54, both scores were T scores with a mean of 50±10). Hypertension patients showed the highest PHS and MHS scores at 39.72 and 39.54, respectively. Patients with heart diseases had the lowest average score on PHS at 28.73. Type 2 diabetic patients and patients with both type 2 diabetes and hypertension had the lowest MHS score of 32.95. The overall assessment showed that most patients had the same health status as last year (30.5%), but health status was slightly worse than those without underlying disease (28.6%). Multiple regression analysis showed that factors related to PHS included having hypertension, having thyroid disease, having asthma, age and marital status. Factors related to MHS were age, marital status and adequacy of monthly income. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used as information for planning treatment and prioritizing chronic disease management by taking into account the quality of life of the patient appropriately.
