Abstract

Objective: To evaluate effect of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and education with diabetic booklet by pharmacists (EDBP) among Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients on 3 outcomes which were blood sugar levels (Fasting Plasma Glucose: FPG and Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1c: HbA1c), medication adherence (measured by 3 methods including keeping visit on appointment date, pill count and medication adherence questionnaire) and knowledge on the disease and self-management. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. Subjects were T2DM patients with poor glycemic control at Diabetes Clinic, Yantakhao Hospital (n=120). The researchers allocated the patients using block randomization (block size of six) into control group (n=60) and study group (n=60). Control group received usual care of the hospital and study group received usual care and interventions which were MI and EDBP from the researchers. The researchers collected the data at months 0, 1 and 4. Results: At the end of the study, mean FPG in study group was significantly lower than that in control group (P=0.035). HbA1c and medication adherence measured by 3 methods between groups were not significantly different. Knowledge on the disease and self-management in study group was significantly higher than that in control group (P=0.028). Conclusion: MI and EDBP improved glycemic control (FPG) and knowledge on the disease and self-management in T2DM patients.
