Effects of Using Video Media and Leaflet in Pga K’nyau Language on Knowledge and Blood Pressure Control in Pga K’nyau Hypertensive Patients

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of using educational video media and leaflet in Pga K’nyau language on knowledge, salt consumption behavior, medication adherence and blood pressure control in Pga K’nyau hypertensive patients. Methods: This prospective quasi-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design was conducted among 146 Pga K’nyau hypertensive patients at Watchan 80th Celebrations hospital between November 2016 and October 2017. The participants met the pharmacist for three times to receive educational video media and leaflet in Pga K’nyau language. The data were collected using a questionnaire on knowledge on hypertension, and salt consumption. A four digit analytical balance was used to record the amount of salt put in tea. Medication adherence was assessed by pill-count and followed up visit. The study monitored blood pressure of the patients in very hospital visit. Results: Mean  score on knowledge significantly increased from 11.26+3.54 (maximum score of 17) before undertaking educational interventions to 14.75+2.34 and 16.02+1.32 after the first and the second educational interventions, respectively. The average amount of salt put in tea was statistically significantly decreased (P<0.001) from 1,740.3+3,279.3 mg/day before the interventions to 636.8+1,142.6 mg/day and 415.4+871.7 mg/day after the interventions respectively. Medication adherence assessed by pill-count was statistically significantly higher (P<0.05) after receiving interventions. After the first and second interventions, the average systolic blood pressure levels were statistically significantly decreased (P<0.001) from 136.6+16.4 mmHg to 130.0+13.1 mmHg and 126.7+12.7 mmHg, respectively,  while the average diastolic blood pressure levels were statistically significantly decreased (p=0.005) from 81.2+11.4 mmHg to 78.6+10.6 mmHg and 78.9+9.8 mmHg, respectively. Conclusion: The use of educational video media and leaflet in Pga K’nyau language to educate Pga K’nyau hypertensive patients could statistically significantly increase their knowledge on hypertension, appropriate salt consumption as well as increased medication adherence and blood pressure control.
