Oral Opening Methods for Oral and Throat Examination for Differential Diagnosis of Acute Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis from Viral or Bacterial Infection in Community Pharmacy Setting

Abstract
Objective: To develop a new oral opening method for differential diagnosis of acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by viral or bacterial infection for application in community pharmacy setting. Method: The study was conducted in thirty healthy volunteers and three health care professionals. In-depth interview was performed to develop the oral opening methods. Then the feasibility of these methods and quality of intraoral images were quantitatively assessed by health care professionals and healthy volunteers. The consistency of the selected oral opening method was also evaluated. Results: Twelve oral opening methods from in-depth interview were assessed. The method that provided the best quality of intraoral images for examination of throat area, intraoral cavity, uvula, palatine tonsils, and the most comforts for patients is widely-open mouth, yawning-like acting. Conclusion: This study offers a novel, practical, and reliable mouth opening method for differential diagnosis of acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis in community pharmacy setting.
