Quality and Safety of Drinking Water from Water Vending Machine in Maha Sarakham

Abstract

Objective: To investigate quality and safety of drinking water from water vending machines in Maha Sarakham province. Method: This research was a descriptive study collecting 133 samples of drinking water from water vending machines located in seven districts. These samples were analyzed for the quality of water by using the test kits developed by the Department of Health including the testes for coliform bacteria, hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria, free residue of chlorine and water hardness. pH was measured by using pH meter. Test results were compared with the criteria specified in the Declaration of Ministry of Public Health entitled drinking water in sealed containers. Results: Ninety-two samples of drinking water (69.2%) failed the microbiologic criteria on coliform bacteria, while four samples (3.0%) failed the criteria on hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria. For physical and chemical criteria, all water samples had no residual chlorines, while water hardness of four samples (3.0%) exceeded standard value (more than 100 mg/L). Seventeen samples (12.8%) did not meet the pH standard with 14 samples (10.5%) having pH<6.5 and 3 samples (2.3%) having pH > 8.5. There were totally 34 samples meeting all standard criteria (25.6%). Conclusion: Proportion of drinking water from water vending machines in Maha Sarakham province meeting the standard criteria of coliform bacteria, hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria, free residual chlorine, water hardness and pH was 25.6%. Consumer should be more aware of harm and risk of drinking water. The relevant authority should regularly monitor the quality of drinking from water vending machines.
