The Impacts of Climate Change on Elderly Health: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Sustainable Adaptation Strategies

Abstract

Climate change significantly impacts public health through various direct and indirect pathways. Among the general population, the elderly are identified as the most vulnerable group due to a combination of biological and social factors, making them susceptible to complex and severe health outcomes. These climate-induced health threats are categorized into five primary areas: (1) heat-related illnesses, (2) vector-borne diseases, (3) air pollution and respiratory diseases, (4) food and water security, and (5) mental health impacts. This article aims to analyze the patterns of these threats regarding the physical and mental well-being of the elderly. Additionally, to mitigate the impacts of climate change, including adaptation and response mechanisms at the policy level, knowledge should be applied in policy and practice through knowledge management processes, lessons learned, and the organization of forums for knowledge exchange to facilitate practical implementation. This involves fostering a learning culture supported by executives and with clear, sustainable performance measurement mechanisms.
