Abstract

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss, requiring standardized initial care to mitigate disease severity. This research aimed to develop and evaluate a nursing practice guideline for newly diagnosed glaucoma patients. The study was conducted from April 2023 to September 2024, employing a four-phase process: (1) problem analysis, (2) guideline development, (3) guideline implementation, and (4) evaluation. The sample comprised four registered nurses and 30 newly diagnosed glaucoma patients. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, and quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The developed guideline covers three phases: pre-examination, examination, and post-examination, integrating the five steps of the nursing process. Results showed a statistically significant increase in patient knowledge regarding the disease, eye drop administration, and appointment adherence post-guideline implementation. While nurses had no difference in knowledge scores before and after using the guidelines. Both nurses and patients reported the highest level of satisfaction with the guideline. This practice guideline should be continuously applied and expanded to interdisciplinary teams for comprehensive long-term patient care
