Abstract

Stroke is a common neurological health problem and a global public health problem. The objective of the study was to study the relationships between the severity of the  disease, social support, stress and coping among family  members of stroke patients. This study used quantitative  research methods. The samples by G*POWER program  were 128 family members of stroke patients admitted to  Buddhachinnaraj Phitsanulok Hospital during 24 to 72  hours. The study included all visitors to hospitalized  patients in the first 24-72 hours on the Neurosurgery Ward,  Male Medical Ward 1 and Female Medical Ward 2.  Constructed questionnaire tool for data collection in study  included the demographic questionnaire, the stress  questionnaire, the coping questionnaire, the social support  questionnaire and Glasgow coma score. Frequency and  percentage were used to analyze. Spearman Rank  Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze data for the  relationships. The results revealed that the severity of the  disease had no correlation with stress or coping. In  addition, social support had no correlation with coping.  However, social support had a significant negative  correlation with stress. The findings of the study can be  used by nurses to improve social support for family  members of stroke patients to reduce stress
