Prevention of Pressure Ulcer in Patients with Open Heart Surgery by Pressure Ulcer Care Model

Pressure ulcer is the common complication in critical patient. This analytical retrospective study aimed to examine the effect of pressure ulcer care model for pressure ulcer prevention in patients with open heart surgery, Buddachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital. Samples consisted of 2 groups , including 1) open heart surgery patients, group before using the pressure ulcer care model: composed of 65 patients from 1 October-31 December 2016 and group after using the model: composed of 40 patients from 1 October-31 December 2017 and 2) 32 registered nurses working at two inpatient units. Research instruments were the pressure ulcer care model, the record form of demographic data and pressure ulcer, test of nurses about pressure ulcer and the questionnaires towards the nurse satisfaction on the pressure ulcer care model. Data were analyzed by using: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Dependent t-test and Fisher' s Exact test. The results showed that after using this model, pressure ulcers were decreased from 23.1% to 2.5% (p = 0.004). Nurses' knowledge related to pressure ulcer scores were increased from 21 to 28 (p = 0.001) and satisfaction scores were at high levels in all dimensions. In conclusion, the usage of pressure care model can reduce pressure ulcer and the nurses have high satisfaction on this model
