Effectiveness of Safe Love Project for Preventing the Sex Risk Behaviours and Unwanted Pregnancy in Nursing Students

Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aims to study the effectiveness of the Safe Love Project in preventing sex-risk behaviours and unwanted pregnancy in nursing students. The purposive sampling consisted of 116 first-year nursing students in the academic year 2020. The project provided the concepts of Information Motivating and training in behavioural skills (Information Motivation and Behavioral Skills Model: IMB Model). Data have been collected in 3 phases: before the experiment, after the experiment, and 1 month after the activity. The questionnaire was used to measure knowledge and attitude. The reliabilities of the tools were .75 and .80 respectively. The data has been analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.
The results show that nursing students have an average score of knowledge about unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases prevention, and attitude toward preventing sex-risk behaviours and unwanted pregnancy after the experiment are statistically higher than those before (t = -3.14, -4.21, -8.29; p < .01).
The research results come from applying the IMB model, which consists of information provided, motivation establishing and necessary skill improvement that leads to knowledge, appropriate attitudes and ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy and safe-sex behaviours. It can be applied to create activities focusing on safe-sex behaviours and unwanted pregnancy avoidance, as well.
