Perceptions and Attitudes towards Waste Management in Students at University of Phayao, Participatory Action Research to Develop a Solid Waste Management Model

Abstract

Perceptions and attitudes towards waste management at University of Phayao
were studied to develop a solid waste management model through participatory action
research (PAR). The objectives of the study were to 1) survey current waste generation
patterns, as well as perceptions and attitudes about waste management by students and 2)
to develop waste management projects and activities by PAR from the results. Data were
analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics (chi-squared and Duncan’s Multiple Range
Test [DMRT]).
The results showed that the most significant causes of waste generation, in order,
were low participation, improper waste management, and insufficient awareness. In
addition, 80% of students agreed that how the participants perceived waste management is
useful for waste management. Moreover waste is a valuable resource and recovered to
exploitation, as well as a source of extra in come. Most students (80%) agreed with the5R
principles (reduce, reject, reuse, recycle, and repair).Participants believed separating waste
was most important for the following reasons, in order: increasing extra income, reducing
waste, and protecting the environment. Difficulties in waste segregation consisted of
frustration, low motivation, and unclear procedures or receptacle.
The implementation of solid waste management system comprised regular
collection, trash supply, sanitary landfill improvement, and waste exploitation. Most people
want to participate in waste management with the university at 82.9%, and to encourage
other partners such as Local municipal and Subdistrict administrative organization to
promote waste management.
