Colon cancer is the majority public health problem worldwide and it
is the important cause of death. The objective of this study to investigated
survival rate and factors affecting survival of sigmoid colon cancer after
surgical treatment at Roi Et Hospital. Method, a retrospective cohort study
and all variables of interested were retrieved from medical records of
patients with sigmoid colon cancer and had surgical treatment at Roi Et
Hospital between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014. All of subjects
were followup the vital status until death or end of study (March 31, 2016).
Descriptive statistics, KaplanMeier survival curve, Logrank test and Cox
proportional hazard model were used for data analyzed. Results, of 88
patients with sigmoid colon cancer most of them were female 60.23% with
mean age was 65.19 years (SD=12.33). The total follow up time was 1,694
personsmonths. The median survival time was 16.80 months. 45 cases were
death during study period with mortality rate was 2.65 per 100 personsmonths.
The 6 months, 1, 2, 3 and 5 years survival rate were 83.95%, 60.48%, 47.06%,
42.28% and 42.28%, respectively. The data analyzed revealed that patients
age more than 65 years (HR adj.: 1.29; 95% CI; 1.001.67), cancer stage II
(HR adj.: 3.39; 95% CI; 1.7415.47), cancer stage III (HR adj.: 3.52; 95% CI;
1.8314.80), cancer metastasis (HR adj.: 3.20; 95% CI; 1.4613.52) and
chemotherapy (HR adj.: 0.43; 95% CI; 0.230.79) were factors affecting
survival of patients with sigmoid colon cancer. Conclusion, after surgical
treatment, cancer stages II, cancer stage III, cancer metastasis were factors
affecting survival of patients meanwhile patients received chemotherapy
treatments have survival better than nonreceived group.
