Effects of PITS - Based Education to Enhance Health Literacy on Self - Management among Older Persons with Knee Osteoarthritis

Introduction: Health literacy promotion is important for older adults with knee osteoarthritis. PITS - based education affects to enhance health literacy and self - management in older adults with knee osteoarthritis.
Research objective: To examine the effect of PITS - based education to enhance health literacy on self - management among older adults with knee osteoarthritis.
Research methodology: This study was a two - group experimental research. The participants were older adults with osteoarthritis attending a sub -district health promoting hospital. Fifty - four participants were randomly selected and assigned into an experimental group (n = 27) and a control group (n = 27). The experimental group received PITS - based education which consisted of four group sessions and one individual session. The control group received usual care. The research instruments included 1) the education plan, 2) a health literacy manual, 3) a knee osteoarthritis video, 4) an understanding personal perception scale, and 5) a health literacy questionnaire. Data collection tools were 1) a personal and illness data recording form, 2) a questionnaire on self - management behavior of older adults with knee osteoarthritis, and 3) the Oxford Knee Score. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t - test, and non - independent t - test.
Results: The experimental group showed a significant enhancement of the self - management mean score compared to the control group (p < .01) and before the intervention (p < .01).
Conclusion: Providing PITS - based education can improve health literacy and self - management in older adults with osteoarthritis.
Implications: Healthcare providers can use the PITS - based educational model to promote self - management in older adults with osteoarthritis.
