Development of a Scale for Self-assessment of Competency in Rational Drug Use for Pharmacy Technicians

Abstract
Objective: To develop and examine psychometric properties of a scale for self-assessment of competency in rational drug use for pharmacy technicians. Methods: The research was a scale development with two phases. Phase 1 involved a study of a rational drug use competency framework and the competence of pharmacy technicians in relation to rational drug use. Phase 2 involved the development and examination of psychometric properties of the instrument. Exploratory factor analysis using the principle component analysis and varimax rotation method was employed to determine construct validity of the scale. Discriminant validity was determined by comparing the scores of the scales in those with in clinical work and those working in the other areas. Result: There were 193 respondents with 79.30% working in clinical care, while 20.70% working in the other areas. After factor extraction, 36 of 36 observed variables were retained with 4 factors with factor loading of 0.54 – 0.87. The eigenvalues were between 4.301 – 7.741. Four factors included 1) rational drug use attitudes, 2) rational drug use knowledge, 3) rational drug use skills, and 4) filling and dispensing for rational drug use with 21.50, 19.53, 14.87 and 11.95% of variance explained, respectively. All components explained 67.85% of the total variance. After grouping variables by component, this tool maintained a high level of reliability with Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole scale 0.96. It was also found that, overall, this assessment was able to distinguish those working in the clinical area from those in other departments. Conclusion: The scale for self-assessment of competency in rational drug use for pharmacy technicians is the first tool in Thailand. It shows a high level of construct validity and reliability.
