Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To analyze similarity of physical characteristics of pills in the forms of tablets and capsules registered in Thailand. Method: This research analyze similarity of physical appearances of pills in the forms of tablets and capsules for human or animal use registered as “dangerous drugs” or “specially controlled drugs” with the Bureau of Drug Administration, Food and Drug Administration. The total of 2,837 drug items with pictures of the pills in the Thai Tablet and Capsule Identification Database of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ubon Ratchathani University were analyzed. The study analyzed similarity of tablets and capsules based on their colors, sizes, and shapes. Results: Three most common “look-alike“ characteristics among tablets and capsules were small white round tablets (457 items), medium white round tablets (253 items) and small yellow round tablets (178 items), respectively. Conclusion: The study found that tablets and capsules with look-alike physical appearances registered in Thailand were abundant. This implies the problems on look-alike drugs leading to confusion in drug use and medication errors. Thus, preventive measures at the system level should be established in the future to resolve the problems on look-alike drugs.
