Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of student engagement and to investigate factors affecting student engagement among pharmacy students at Silpakorn University. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study used an online questionnaire to collect data from 1,020 undergraduate pharmacy students in the first to the sixth year of study. The questionnaire collected information on various factors including personal information, mental health status, support from family, peer, and academic advisor, faculty facilities, etc. Student engagement was measured using the University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI) questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to reduce the number of independent variables and reduce the problem from the relationship among independent variables. Multiple regression was used to determine the factors affecting student engagement. Results: There was a total of 312 respondents (30.59 percent). Overall average score of student engagement was 57.11 ± 5.66 out of the full score of 75. Six factors significantly affecting student engagement were scholarship (P=0.014), curriculum, teacher and faculty reputation (P<0.001), learning facilities (P<0.001), family supports (P<0.001), academic advisor supports (P<0.001) and peers supports (P=0.001). These factors explained 32.3 percent of the variance of student engagement. Conclusion: Factors affecting student engagement included personal factors, social factors and school factors. Educational institutions can use the findings on these factors to plan for increasing student engagement.
