Development of Teaching Approaches for the Course on English Skill in Pharmacy by Using Concept Mapping

Abstract

Objective: To develop teaching approaches for the course on English Skill in Pharmacy by using concept mapping. Method: The research was a mixed method study. Subjects participating in the development of teaching approaches by using concept mapping were 4 representatives of faculty members, 1 representative of administrators, and 10 representatives of students. The research procedures included in-depth interviews with the instructors of English Skill in Pharmacy on the problems in teaching, synthesis of data from the course evaluation by 120 students, organizing a meeting of representatives of faculty members, administrators and students to brainstorm and propose ideas for resolving the problems. The data were grouped using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis to obtain a concept map. Results: Teaching approaches of English Skills in Pharmacy obtained from concept mapping were 1) course content and teaching, 2) teaching preparation and examinations, 3) assignments, 4) teaching materials and media, 5) teaching techniques, and 6) teaching and learning activities. Conclusion: Teaching in English Skills in Pharmacy should focus on speaking skills in the context of drugstores and create an enjoyable learning environment.
