Effect of Educational and Motivational Program by Authorities on the Improvement of Operational Standards among Aesthetic Medical Clinics in Udon Thani Province: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Objective: To evaluated effect of the educational and motivational program by authorities on the improvement of the operational standards among aesthetic medical clinics in Udon Thani province. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. Twenty-four clinics in control group received usual standards audit of the Udon Thani Provincial Health Office. Twenty-three clinics in experimental group received usual standards audit in conjunction with an educational and motivational program based on the Theory of Planned Behavior with reinforcement of positive attitudes, motivation to comply the norm and the reduction of barriers in legal compliance. The intervention was delivered twice, one week apart. Outcome of the study was the score from inspection of clinics according to the sanatorium standard assessed one month after first time delivery of intervention. Results: Overall operational score of intervention group increased from 96.32 ± 3.42 before the intervention to 99.30 ± 1.24 after the intervention (P <0.001). Domains with statistically significant increase in operational score included establishment inspection, displaying information to clients, types and number of essential tools, medicines and medical supplies and emergency lifesaving kits. Comparison of changed scores after the intervention between the study and control group found that the changed overall operating score in the study group was 7.64 ± 3.89 points higher than that of the control group (95% CI: 5.30-9.98). The changed score in intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group in the following domains; establishment inspection, displaying information to clients, types and number of essential tools, medicines and medical supplies and emergency life support kits. Conclusion: Educational and motivational programs in conjunction with inspections of standards by provincial health officer can increase the standard of operations of aesthetic medical clinics in Udon Thani province.
