Efficacy of Coal Tar in Treatment for Psoriasis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Psoriasis is a genetic disease characterized by chronic inflammatory skin conditions. It is found in about 2% of the total population. Factors inducing exacerbation of the disease include fermented foods, chemicals, alcohols, certain drugs, or diseases related to visceral organs such as liver disease, kidney disease. Common location of dermatitis lesions of psoriasis is the skin frequently scratched such as elbows, knees, arms, legs, coccyx, neck, and head. The main characteristic of the rash is a thick patch with white scales. There are several treatments for psoriasis, including topical therapy, treatment with oral drug, treatment with biologic injection and ultraviolet phototherapy. There are two treatment modalities for psoriasis, i.e., 1. monotherapy or 2. combination therapy. Topical steroid therapy is the first choice for the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis. However, due to the relatively high long-term side effects of the treatment, such as permanent striae, birthmarks like lesions or bruising, and steroid-resistant conditions. Therefore, tar or coal tar treatment for psoriasis in Thailand is preferred due to the fact that there are several studies showing its good efficacy in treating psoriasis by causing remission of inflammation for a long time and reducing the recurrence better than topical steroid.
