Abstract

The hair that grows over the human scalp is part of the epidermis. Hair normally falls and grows. Hair loss and regeneration processes are related to various factors such as nutritional conditions, genetics, etc. Acute alopecia frequently found in both males and females is commonly caused by heredity or known as androgenetic alopecia. This types of alopecia is caused by genetics and androgenic hormones. Treatments in current guidelines for alopecia include the use of drugs, laser comb, as well as hair transplantation. This article is mainly focused on drug therapy. Drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of certain androgenetic alopecia include oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Due to side effects of oral finasteride such as headache and erectile dysfunction etc., there were several studies on the topical use of finasteride. Many studies found that topical finasteride is effective for alopecia, and exhibits less side effects than oral finasteride.
