Abstract

Objective: To determine factors relating to medication adherence of hypertensive patients. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey research. The study collected data from medical records and questionnaires on patient factors, health status factors and assessed medication adherence by using a questionnaire. The subjects were 303 hypertensive patients diagnosed by doctors and treated at a district health promoting hospital in Phayao Province between October 2018-September 2019. The subjects were chosen by using the multi-stage random sampling from the list of eligible patients. Analysis of predictive factors for medication adherence was conducted using binary logistic regression. Results: 73.27 percent of patients showed adequate medication adherence. Number of comorbidities and knowledge on hypertension significantly predicted medication adherence (P <0.05) with odds ratio = 0.57, 95% Cl = 0.37-0.88 and odds ratio = 1.047, 95% Cl = 1.03-1.39 respectively. Conclusions: Medical staff should pay attention to the patient factors and health status related to medication adherence including number of comorbidities and knowledge on hypertension and take these factors into consideration in designing intervention to promote medication adherence in patients with hypertension.
