Developing a Low Cost Diagnostic Device for Differentiating between Acute Pharyngitis and Acute Tonsillitis in Community Pharmacy Setting

Abstract

Objective: 1) To create an innovated economical medical equipment for distinguishing between acute pharyngitis (AP) and acute tonsillitis (AT), 2) To test the accuracy and efficacy of the device in laboratory. 3) To evaluate the effectiveness of the device in patient with AP and AT. Method: This was a research and development study consisting of the following activities; brainstorming ideas among multidisciplinary experts, developing and inventing a device, and validating the accuracy and efficacy of the device to reach the standard criteria including conducting clinical testing in patient with AP and AT. Result: The prototype developed was a non-contact thermometer for patients that transmitted data into an application on a mobile phone using Bluetooth and displaying all the information needed to differentiate the diseases on the same screen. Accuracy and precision of temperature measurement was in the standard criteria. The measured temperature had a high correlation with that measured by the hospital’s infrared thermometer. Using the prototype with the McIsaac score could correctly predict the likelihood of having Group A Streptococci infection as measured using a rapid antigen detection test with the rate of 100% and reduced unnecessary antimicrobial use by 100%. Conclusion: This study invented the new device, "NU_SnapThroat" for differential diagnosis of AP and AT, which is ready to be studied in clinical trials.
