Abstract

Objective: To develop an eye-drop instillation technique using one hand. Methods: This study was research and development using mixed methods including 1) in depth interview with multidisciplinary team to attain information for developing an eye drop instillation techniques using one hand 2) creating instructions for the instillation that were simple to follow, and photograph each technique 3) presenting each method to health  professionals for blinded evaluation of precision, safety and practicality, and 4) selecting three methods with the highest scores on evaluation and then having health professionals assess their feasibility for use in practice based on principle of universal design and testing in 30 healthy volunteers to determine the best method Results: Among 10 eye drop instillation techniques using one hand evaluated, the method using the ring and the little finger to pull the lower eyelid open, then using the index finger and thumb to hold the bottle was the most precise and safest method. Conclusion: This study offers a precise and safe eye drop instillation method using one hand, called “NU Drop”.
