Abstract

Objective: To develop an instrument to measure the quality of work life of medical technologists following the principles for development and validation of the research instrument. Methods: This study was a survey research using questionnaires developed in the study. The questionnaire underwent examination of content validity, Item analysis, reliability and construct validity. Subjects were 327 medical technologists who work in hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health. Results: The initial version of the instrument with 64 items exhibited content validity with items’ indexes of item–objective congruence (IOC) > 0.5 in 93.75% of the questions. The final version of the measure with 39 items showed inter-item correlation at 0.30-0.70 in 70.58% of the items and ค่า corrected item-total correlation > 0.30 in 89.74% of the items. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the whole scale was 0.95 and the coefficients for each dimensions ranged from 0.86-0.91. Exploratory factor analysis with principal component analysis and varimax rotation showed that the scale consisted of 5 factors including opportunities for personal development, career ladder and employment security, constitutionalism in the organization and social integration, professional values for society, conditions for safe working and health promotion and adequate and fair compensation. Eigenvalues of each factor ranged from 1.632–13.72. There were 3 items or more with factor loading > 0.30 in each factor. Quality of work life of medical technologists was at a moderate level. Conclusion:  The assessment tool developed in the study shows content validity, construct validity, reliability, and appropriateness in the items making it suitable for assessing the quality of work life among medical technologists.
