Abstract

Community health system is Thai health ideology based on the concept of primary health care. Primary health care is the revived concept of primary health care brought back and modified according to current health context. Integration is a concept used for explaining the relationship among participating units within community health system aiming for a better efficacy and efficiency of the system. Therefore, community health system, primary health care, primary health services, and integration are all related in term of their value in creating health care process to make the people healthy and healthy society, which is the ultimate goal of the community health system. Integration in the health system means the harmoniously combining of people, groups, organizations, knowledge, technology, and so on, related to health in order to create the cooperation at various levels in managing the health system leading to the change in lifestyle, behavior or health practices which in turn leads to well-being in the target population. Integration in the health system emphasizes the harmony among each integrating participants. The goal of developing an integrated system determines pattern, degree and extent of integration. In all integrated units, emphasis should be placed on administrative and normative integration because both of these affect the linkage, the relationship and the sustainability of integration. Development of health system based on integration concept illustrates the improved outcomes of both management and health outcomes in target populations. Many policies on health system development in Thailand reflect the integration perspective. However, there are currently limited studies on the development of the Thai health system using the concept of integration as a framework. Therefore, further study in this direction is encouraged to provide knowledge to support the further development of Thai health system to progress.
