Effect of Pharmacist Counseling with Telephone Follow-up in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To compare metabolic syndrome components between outpatients with metabolic syndrome receiving pharmacist counseling with telephone follow-up and those receiving only pharmacist counseling. Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial in outpatients with metabolic syndrome in internal medicine clinic at Phranakhon Sri Ayutthaya Hospital during January 2017 to September 2017. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups: control group (pharmacist counseling only) and study group (pharmacist counseling with telephone follow-up). All patients received pharmaceutical care and individualized lifestyle modification counseling by the researcher. Afterwards, only study group received individualized telephone follow-up every 2 weeks for 5 times. Outcome measures included values of each metabolic syndrome component (waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressure). Results: The study recruited 245 patients, with 111 in study group and 123 in control group. At the end of the study (9-12weeks), patients in study group had a significantly lower fasting blood glucose level than those in control group (P=0.009). No differences were found in the other metabolic syndrome components. Conclusion: Pharmacist counseling with telephone follow-up has positive effects in improving metabolic syndrome components, especially fasting blood glucose in metabolic syndrome patients.
