Outcomes of Family Pharmacist Network Services in Universal Health Care Coverage

Abstract

Objective: To study the outcomes of family pharmacist network services in Universal Health Care Coverage (UC) in terms of management of drug related problems (DRPs) and patient’s satisfaction towards pharmacist’s services. Method: This research is a descriptive study gathering the data on DRPs management in projects on pharmacy refill clinic and medication therapy management service (MTM) of 20 community pharmacies in Khon Kaen during December 2014 to March 2015. The study also employed semi-structured telephone interview to determine service satisfaction. Result: There were 46 patients in the MTM project with an average age of 57.83±11.65 years. There were 54 identified DRPs. The pharmacists resolved 75.93% of DRPs problems and referred the other 11.11% of DRPs to physicians. Interview with 26 patients revealed that satisfaction of service procedures, service from pharmacists, benefits for clients and overall satisfaction were 4.58, 4.59, 4.66 and 4.77 respectively (out of full score 5). There were 19 patients in the Pharmacy Refill Clinic project with an average age of 5.62±2.43 years. There were 19 identified DRPs. The pharmacists were able to resolve 84.21% of DRPs. Satisfaction of service procedures, service from pharmacists, benefits for clients and overall satisfaction were 4.83, 4.74, 4.78 and 4.67 respectively (out of full score 5). Conclusion: Family pharmacist could identify and resolve DRPs. Patients were satisfied with the services at the high to highest levels. Therefore, family pharmacist network services in UC should be applied to further develop services by community pharmacists to become an integral part of Thailand’s health care system.
