Factors Affecting Medication Adherence of Diabetic Patients at Police General Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of medication non-adherence in diabetic patients at Police General Hospital and to study the factors affecting medication adherence. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study collected the data from medical records and patient interview on the factors hypothesized as predictors of medication adherence. The researchers also measured medication adherence using questionnaires. The study was conducted at the endocrine clinic, Police General Hospital. Results: Total of 168 diabetic patients had an average medication adherence score of 37.4±2.2 (total score=40). The prevalence of medication non-adherence was 16.7% (28 patients). The number of co-morbid conditions had a negative relationship with the medication adherence (r=-0.179, P = 0.020). The patients who were unskilled labors/bus drivers/taxi drivers had a lower level of medication adherence score than the other occupations (P = 0.035). Multiple regression analysis revealed 3 factors affecting medication adherence were working as unskilled labors/bus drivers/taxi drivers (P = 0.018), being housewife/house husband/retired (P = 0.030) and the number of co-morbid conditions (P = 0.003) Conclusion: Majority of patients had good medication adherence. The patients who had many co-morbid conditions and those working as unskilled labors/bus drivers/taxi drivers had a significantly lower level of medication adherence than the other groups. These 2 groups of patients need a close attention and intervention if medication non-adherence is identified.
