Abstract

Objective: To develop and determine validity and reliability of the Quality of life-Thyroid Version (QOL-TV) in Thai. Method: The scale was translated from English to Thai using forward and backward translation. It consists of 56 items with 4 domains including physical well-being, psychological well-being, social concerns and spiritual well-being. The subjects were 334 thyroid cancer patients at Songklanakarind Hospital. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to determine the optimum number of factors in the QOL-TV for Thai subjects. Criterion validity was determined from the correlation between the QOL-TV subscales and the FACT-G. Construct validity was determined using known-group validation. Results: Reliability of all domains of the QOL-TV was satisfactory (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.7). Exploratory factor analysis yielded 6 dimensions including physical well-being, psychological well-being, free of distress from the illness and treatment, free from fear of disease progression, social well-being and spiritual well-being. Overall, the correlation between subscales of the FACT-G and the QOL-TV was consistent in size and direction to those hypothesized, implying the criterion-related validity of the QOL-TV. Some subscales of the QOL-TV were able to discriminate the patients with different ECOG scores, co-morbidities, and duration of treatment while the FACT-G could not do so. The QOL-TV and the FACT-G could discriminate patients receiving or withdrawing thyroid hormone and stage of cancer, with the similar effect size. The FACT-G showed a bigger effect size than the QOL-TV in the known group validation in patients with different age groups. Conclusion: The conclusion of the study is the QOL-TV shows a satisfactory reliability and validity, and is understandable by thyroid cancer patients. Health professionals could use the measure to assess the treatment outcomes.
