The Effect of Pictograms on the Understanding of the Parents on the Use of Antibiotic Dry Syrup

Abstract
Objective: To assess the effects of pictograms on the understanding of parents on the use of antibiotic dry syrup. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. The parents whose children prescribed with antibiotic dry syrup were randomized to a treatment group (n=40) or a control group (n=40). The treatment group received both verbal counseling and a pictogram on the use of antibiotic dry syrup. The controls received only verbal counseling. A questionnaire on understanding of the medication use was sent to the parents. Results: Twenty six subjects (65%) in the control group and 32 subjects (80%) in the treatment group responded to the survey. Both groups were not different on the scores on overall understanding of antibiotic use (78.41 in the treatment group and 75.17 in the control group). More subjects in the treatment group (71.9%) compare to those in the control groups (46.2%) had correct responses on mixing technique. Less than half of the parents in both groups understood what the appropriate water for reconstituting the dry syrup was. Moreover, less than 70% of subjects in both groups showed a correct understanding on how to take “before meal” medication and the stability of dry syrup after reconstitution. Conclusion: The pictogram with verbal counseling was useful to improve the parents’ understanding on how to reconstitute antibiotic dry syrup, compared to verbal counseling alone. However, the pictogram should be further improved to be able to increase the understanding on the issues identified problems in the study.
