Abstract

Classification for drug related problems (DRPs) is very important to pharmaceutical care. In the United State of America, pharmacists prefer the classification of DRP into 8 categories as proposed by Hepler and Strand. Later, the classification has been modified to 11 categories by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In European countries, the practitioners have accepted DRP classification of the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE). Problems and causes are clearly separated in the PCNE classification. There are 4 groups of PCNE classification: 1) the problems 2) the causes 3) the interventions and 4) outcomes of intervention. DRP classification by PCNE is a systematic and suitable approach for clinical practice and provides the information on cost saving as a result of pharmaceutical care.
