Factors Affecting Consumption of Health Products among Diabetes Patients at Thapla Hospital, Uttaradit

Abstract

Objective: To study consumption behavior of health products (HPs) in diabetic patients at Thapla Hospital, Thapla District, Uttaradit Province. Method: This study was a cross-sectional study. The subjects consisted of 227 diabetes receiving treatment in Thapla Hospital in 2018 who were selected by simple random sampling. The data were collected using questionnaires. Results: 78.85% of subjects received HPs information from television and 29.96% consumed HPs. The most popular HPs product was herbs (42.80%), followed by dietary supplements (22.86 percent) and modern medicine (20.00 percent). 46.43 percent of the subjects decided to use HPs on their own. The reason for using HPs was using as tonic (38.64 percent). Most HPs sources were offspring (25.00 percent). 48.53 percent of patients took diabetic medications as prescribed together with HPs. 7.31 percent stopped medication and used only HPs. 44.12 percent reported that symptoms slightly improved after consuming HPs. Side effects were reported in 4.41 percent of patients. Conclusion: Most diabetics obtain information about HPs from television, use HPs in combination with medicines for being tonic and reducing blood sugar levels, and believe that HPs can treat diabetes. The most common source of HPs is the offspring.
