Ultrasonographic Characteristics of Scrotal Masses

Abstract

Scrotal mass is the common problem of male genitalia. This retrospective descriptive study aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic findings of patients with scrotal masses in Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok hospital from  January 2007 to December 2016. The history, physical examination, ultrasonographic findings,operative note,  pathological report and clinical follow up at least 6 months were collected and analyzed. There were 142 patients investigated. The ultra-sonographic results were hydrocele (n = 46), infection (n = 43), inguinal  hernia (n = 19), tumor (n = 16), cyst (n = 12), testicular torsion (n = 6), varicocele (3) and others(3). Seventy  nine patients (55.6%) were operated and 33 patients (23.2%) had pathologic results. Sixty three patients (44.4%) were follow up at least six months to confirm the ultrasound diagnosis. Ultrasonographic findings of  patient with scrotal mass had accuracy 96.5%. Ultrasonography gave incorrect diagnosis in 5 patients (3.5%).  Therefore, ultrasonography of scrotal masses has high accuracy and could help in the diagnosis.
