Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication during pregnancy that causes several adverse maternal and fetal effects. This retrospective chart review aimed at comparing pregnancy and neonatal outcomes among the women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus, the high-risk for gestational diabetes and the low-risk singleton pregnant women in Naresuan University Hospital. Total 1,747 pregnant women were divided to be 281 in GDM, 835 in high-risk and 631 in low-risk group, respectively. The prevalence of GDM was 16.1%. Postpartum hemorrhage was higher in the GDM and high-risk group (5.99% and 5.34%) but non-significantly higher odds ratio compared to the low-risk group. Fetal large for gestational age group was significantly higher odds ratio in the GDM grou pcompared to the low-risk group. The odds ratio of shoulder dystocia and birth canal injury among three groups was not different. The results of this study indicated that high-risk group had higher adverse outcomes compared to low-risk group. Although clinical practice guideline for GDM has been implemented for many years, the maternal and fetal complications still exist. These results will provide useful information for improvement of antenatal care which to hopefully minimize both maternal and fetal morbidities in the future
