Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) has been recognized for its potential to regulate blood glucose levels and may complement standard diabetestreatment. This non-randomized trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of bitter melon capsules in patients with type 2 diabetes who had inadequate blood sugar control despite using conventional medications at Ban Krang and Ban Laem Pho Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospitals in Phitsanulok. A study enrolled 60 participants, assigned into two groups. Each group consisted of 30 patients. The experimental group received 500 mg bitter melon capsules, taking two capsules before meals, in the morning and evening, along with their existing medications continuously for 12 weeks. The control group continued with standard diabetes medications alone. Analysis blood sugar, kidney and liver function using ANCOVA revealed that, post-treatment, the experimental group had significantly lower blood sugar levels by 25.83 mg/dL and HbA1c by 0.68% compared with control group (p < 0.05). However, the liver and kidney function level did not differ. These findings suggest that bitter melon capsules in conjunction with standard medication are more effective in reducing both blood sugar levels than standard medication alone and safe for clinical use
