Abstract

Unplanned readmissions provide a huge impact on palliative patients and their families. This retrospective cohort study aimed to study cause for readmission of palliative patients at Bangrakam Hospital. The data of 157 patients were collected from 1 October 2020 to 31 September 2022. The results showed that the most of palliative patients were woman 52.9%, age 61-80 years 46.5%, cancer 33.8%, length of stay 3-7 day 54.1% and end-stage of palliative patients (PPS 0-30%) 64.3%. Causes of readmission in palliative patients were development of new co-comorbidities 52.9% (most common cause were fever/sepsis 8.9% and urinary tract infection 7.6%), disease progression 38.9% (most common cause were dyspnea 11.5% and fatique 10.2%), decided advance care planning problem 4.5%, family problem 3.8%. Conclusion causes of readmission are new co-comorbidities, disease progression, decided advance care planning problem and family problem. Some problems are appropriate to readmission for treatment. Some problems can be reduced by good palliative home care and a better communication.
