Abstract

Coronary artery bypass surgery is a major life-threatening surgery. This is a model development study to evaluate the  outcomes of new nursing care model for coronary bypass  graft patients comparing to the old one. The study was  conducted at the Thoracic Surgery Unit and Thoracic  Intensive Care Unit, Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital  during May 2021 to December 2021. This study comprised  of four phases: 1) studied the current situation, 2)  developed the nursing care model for patients undergoing  coronary artery bypass graft, 3) utilized the nursing care  model for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass  graft  and 4) evaluated outcomes of nursing care model for  patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft. The data  were analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean, standard  deviation, median (Q1, Q3), McNemar test, paired t-test,  Wilcoxon signed ranks test, chi-square test, Mann Whitney  U test and independent t-test statistics with significant level  at 0.05. The research results showed that after  utilizing the developed nursing care model, the scores of  abilities to provide nursing care to patients before surgery,  preparing for surgery, nursing care in the critical phase  and  after surgery and knowledge of nursing practice were  higher than those before utilizing the developed nursing  care model. Also, the average of total length of stay in the  hospital decreased significantly. Thus, administration  nurses should apply this developed nursing care model for  patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft for  patients who have undergone surgery in the hospital in  order to keep patients' safety regarding complications of  surgery
