Stress Management for Stroke Elderly Caregivers

Abstract

Thailand has entered an aging society. The elderly often suffers from a stroke that causes death and disability. After discharge, they need continuous complex care. There is stress for caregiver. This action research (qualitative & quantitative study) aimed to develop a stress management model for caregiver's elderly among stroke patients in Faktha District, Uttaradit Province between November, 2019-July, 2020. The data were analyzed and presented as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The stress levels were compared before and after using the stress management model with paired t-test. Which were as follows: Step 1 situational assessment, Step 2 alternative sources of benefit's assessment and situation management, Step 3 review of knowledge and stress management method, and Step 4 model evaluation. The result revealed the mean score of caregivers' stress levels after using the stress management model was statistically significantly reduced from 8.08 to 5.93 with high level of influence (ES = 1.4, p < 0.001). The caregivers were satisfied with the overall use of the model, suitability and can following were at a high level. Therefore, this study showed the significant of the model for assisting caregivers to release the stress and also the healthcare providers can apply the model based on their context and problem areas.
