Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is a simple screening tool for alcohol
consumption problems in primary health care unit. But the use of AUDIT cooperated with the diagnosis
of heart disease in Thailand was limited. This study aimed to evaluate the left ventricular size and
mass by echocardiography in alcohol drinkers according to AUDIT evaluation form. The population were
people, aged over 20 years, living in Tambol Tha-Pao, Amphur Muang, Phitsanulok. The number of
sample size, 70, was calculated by using proportion formula. Data was collected by interview of general
information. Assessment of alcohol problem using AUDIT evaluation form, physical examination and
echocardiography. The results showed that the alcoholic drinkers in AUDIT level 2, 3 and 4 had
left ventricular internal diameter 47.93 ± 5.77, 49.37 ± 5.34, 49.16 ± 3.65 millimeter respectively,
statistically significant more than the non-alcohol drinkers (p = 0.007) and the left ventricular mass
185.33 ± 42.71, 186.33 ± 37.42, 190.33 ± 30.30 grams respectively, statistically significant more than
the non-alcohol drinkers (p = 0.025). Left ventricular mass index of alcohol drinkers in AUDIT level 4 was
significantly higher than the drinkers in AUDIT level 1 and the non-alcoholic beverage drinkers (p = 0.007).
Therefore, AUDIT evaluation form has benefit for screening the risk of left ventricular enlargement of
alcohol drinkers in primary health care unit.
