The quality of life of elderly cataract patients before and after intraocular lens implantation surgery at General Hospital

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the quality of life of the elderly with senile cataract before and after intraocular lens implantation surgery at General Hospital. Samples were elderly patient who was admitted to Hospitalization, during December 2015 and March 2016. Sixty four subjects were included in the study by a purposive sampling method. Research instruments comprised of a patient’s medical Cronbach ‘s record and modified Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire by Tongkoon Yubuapa that developed by Chan et al. The Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire reliability was established with a Cronbach ‘s alpha coefficient of 0.86. Data was analyzed by using the statistics, frequency, sum, mean, percentage, paired t-test standard deviation which programs for personal computer.

Major finds were as follows:

1. The average age of 70.43 years old with majority who female (71.90%), educational background of 34 primary school students consisted of 53.10%, married couples 58%, or 90.60%, located outside the city limits, 30% or 46.90%. They live with 52 children and their families. 81.30 self-employed  together with a patron, most of them live in 39 houses, 60%.90, and enough 41 persons or 64.10%. There were 62 caregivers (96.90%), 57 relatives (89.10%), 50 children (78.10%) with moderate vision (52%), 81.30% sight There were 29 diseases, accounting for 45.31%. Prior to the operation, most of the sightings were in the group of vision defects. 36 people accounted for 56.25% of blind lines, 20 people or 31.25%. Near-normal vision in 8 cases was 12.51%.After surgery, most of the facial eyesight was surgical in the group of the 31 normal eyesight, 48.43% were blind, 7% were blind. 93 and normal vision of 4 people accounted for 6.25%
2. The preoperative cataract group had overall quality of life score and the quality of life aspect mostly in the middle except for discomfort from cataract and the emotional and psychological aspects of the low level. Postoperative quality of life score overall and the quality of life on all sides is high except for the emotional and mental level is moderate.
3. Overall quality of life score and quality of life after cataract surgery is higher than before.The surgery was statistically significant at 0.001.
