Effectiveness of a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Program on Oral Health among Orthodontic Patients

This quasi-experimental research aimed to evaluate the effects of screening, brief advice, and referral to treatment program on plaque levels and gingival inflammation among orthodontic patients. The study sample consisted of 46 patients receiving full-mouth fixed orthodontic treatment at the 50 Pansa Mahavajiralongkorn Hospital. They were divided into two groups: the control group (23 participants) and the experimental group (23 participants). The experimental tool included screening, brief advice, and referral to treatment program. The study was conducted over a period of 4 weeks, from April 28, 2025 to May 29, 2025. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Fisher’s exact test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann–Whitney U test, with the level of statistical significance set at 0.05.
The study found that the experimental group and the control group did not differ in their oral health care behaviors, including tooth brushing, dental flossing, and receiving dental scaling. However, after participation in the program, both groups showed a statistically significant reduction in mean plaque levels and gingival inflammation (p<0.05) (-1.50 (-1.67, -1.33); -1.00 (-1.17, -0.83); -0.83 (-1.00, -0.67);
-0.67 (-0.83, -0.50)). When comparing the experimental group with the control group before and after participating in the program, it was found that the experimental group had significantly lower levels of dental plaque and gingival inflammation than the control group (p<0.05) (-0.67 (-0.83, -0.50); -0.67 (-0.83, -0.50).
The findings indicate that the program was effective in promoting oral health care behaviors and significantly reducing plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation among orthodontic patients.
